    ROAD TO STRAB


    Okay here we go the actual physical road to Strab 2012, Ponta Malongane Mozambique: 

    - First part up and to the Hendriena turnoff fine with two tollgates (R24 and R40)
    - From there the road gets bumpy with heavy early morning mist
    - No real cool pitstops at Hendriena, rather push through to Ermelo
    - Sporadic Road works with STOP and GO’s leaving Ermelo through Piet Retief until Pongola.
    - Road out of Pongola looks good
    - If you want to drive the shorter route, you can take the Jozini road turnoff to the left 55km outside Pongola. Between Jozini and the T-Junction the road is full of potholes, but after you turn right at the T-juction, the road is very good until you reach the border.
    - Longer road from Pongola via Hluhluwe in a good condition
    - Three minor STOP and GO’s via Hluhluwe. The Hluhluwe way is 80 kilometres further but the road up to the border is in a good condition
    - Kwangwanase (Kosi Bay) is your last stop before the border. A last few twist and turns but the road is fine
    - At the border remember to be polite and patient.

    NB: GIVE YOURSELF 11 HOURS TRAVELLING TIME to be safe

    pedestrians on the road and remember that it will be slow going at times, so please build sufficient
    margin into your driving time.

    Please note: Enter Mozambique through the Kosibay Border Post not through Komatipoort.

    Please take note if you are travelling on the N2 towards Pongola, there are road works and the road is in a bad condition.

    Directions to Malongane


    From Gauteng:

    The shortest route is as follows:

    From Pretoria/Johannesburg drive to Witbank - 112 Km’s (S25.89561°, E029.25282°)
    From Witbank drive to Middelburg
    Take the 3rd offramp after the tollgate - 141 Km’s (S25.8243°, E029.52767°)
    Turn right to Hendrina - 184 Km’s (S26.17293°, E029.72121°)
    Straight through to Ermelo - 232 Km’s (S26.51698°, E029.98431°)
    From Ermelo take the N2 to Piet Retief - 330 Km’s (S27.00439°, E030.79468°)
    Continue to Pongola - 430 Km’s (S27.38342°, E031.62415°)
    Continue on N2
    Turn left to Jozini - 482 Km’s (S27.54277°, E031.97897°)
    Through Jozini, keep left over dam wall - 500 Km’s (S27.42503°, E032.07366°)
    At T-junction turn right - 537 Km’s (S27.09919°, E032.15900°)
    Follow the road to Manguzi/Kwangwanasi - 603 Km’s (S26.98895°, E032.75589°)
    Straight to Kosi Bay border post - 618 Km’s (S26.86427°, E032.82940°)
    To Malongane (sand road) - 632 Km’s (S26.79591°, E032.89114°)

    Due to the current roadworks between Ermelo and Pongola, you have two alternate routes as shown on the map you can download.  The road between Ermelo and Piet Retief is worst affected.  In order to bypass that you can do the following:

    Route 1
    (not advised during the day due to high volumes of truck traffic between Hendrina/Middelburg offramp and Ermelo)
    Take the above route to Ermelo
    As you enter Ermelo, take the Amsterdam road to your left
    As you exit town you will turn right on the Amsterdam road.
    In Amsterdam turn right toward Piet Retief
    You will enter the Ermelo – Piet Retief road about 11 km before Piet Retief, thereby bypassing all the roadworks.

    Route 2
    (this route can be travelled at all hours)
    Take the N4 east as described above.
    Drive past the Middleburg/Hendrina offramp.
    About 38km on, take the Carolina offramp
    Drive through Carolina and follow the route through Amsterdam to Piet Retief

    When you go through the South Afrian border, the road splits to Ponta Malongane and Ponta d'Ouro.

Okay here we go the actual physical road to Strab 2011, Ponta Malongane Mozambique:

 

- First part up and to the Hendriena turnoff fine with two tollgates (R24 and R40)

- From there the road gets bumpy with heavy early morning mist

- No real cool pitstops at Hendriena, rather push through to Ermelo

- Road leaving Ermelo has a stretch of road works which is bumpy and narrow for about 15 kilometres

- First STOP and GO is about 20 kilometres outside Ermelo

- Second STOP and GO is shortly after the first

- If travelling at night please be cautious because there are people ignoring the STOP and GO’s

- The road is much better after the second STOP and GO

- Third STOP and GO is about 45 kilometres before Piet Retief

- Road just before Piet Retief: tricky road works be alert.

- Road going through Piet Retief bumpy with potholes

- Fourth STOP and GO

- Roads good after the fourth STOP and GO but only for a while and then serious potholes. Early morning travellers be aware of kids walking to school

- Road really bad, please be careful, non-stop potholes and crack in roads

- Road much better 40 kilometres before Pongola (Don’t pick up the crazy cow in the black and white dress)

-Fifth STOP and GO (Bananas for sale) not a very well controlled STOP and GO, be aware

- Sixth STOP and GO be prepared for a long wait and lots of trucks

- Seventh STOP and GO shortly after the sixth one and not that bad

- Road out of Pongola looks good

- Road still looks good. Instead of the Jozini way we took the Hluhluwe way

- Road via Hluhluwe in a good condition

- Three minor STOP and GO’s via Hluhluwe. The Hluhluwe way is 80 kilometres further but the road up to the border is in a good condition
